Do I Need a Website If I’m Already on Airbnb?

14 October 2026

Short answer: yes. Keep Airbnb for what it does well, and add a website of your own for what it cannot do. They are not rivals. Your listing is where many guests book. Your website is where guests find you, learn about you and contact you directly.

Why Airbnb alone is not enough

Your Airbnb listing lives inside someone else’s platform. The platform decides how it is shown, where it ranks and what sits next to it. You can have a spotless rating and still see your listing buried under others, because you do not control the order. If your listing is changed, reshuffled or suspended, you have nowhere else to point your guests.

A website is something you own. Nobody else controls how it looks, what it says or who sees it next to you.

The three things a website gives you

1. Google visibility

Travellers search Google for things like “self-catering cottage in Hermanus” or “guest house near the beach”. A well-built website, set up with local SEO, can appear in those results alongside the big platforms, not only inside them. Rankings depend on your area and your competition, so nobody can promise you a position, but without a website you are not in the running at all.

2. Direct enquiries

A website gives guests a clear next step: a WhatsApp button, a call button, or a link through to your Airbnb or Booking.com listing. Guests who contact you directly can ask about dates, pets, parking or a long-stay rate and get an answer from you. You are also not sharing the screen with ten similar listings.

3. Control of your story

On your own site you choose the photos, the order they appear in, your rates, your house rules and your best guest reviews. You can explain the neighbourhood, the beach walk or the braai area in your own words, and change it whenever the season changes.

What a website does not do

A website does not replace the booking tools, calendar and review system that Airbnb gives you. Most hosts keep their listings active and use the website as an extra front door. One word of care: Airbnb has rules about taking guests off the platform once they have booked there, so read the host terms. Your website is for guests who find you directly, not for pulling existing Airbnb bookings away.

It does not have to be big or slow to build

You do not need a large custom project to get started. A direct-booking website for hosts includes a photo gallery, a live availability calendar, a booking request form, reviews, calendar sync with Airbnb and Booking.com and local SEO, and can be live in as little as 48 hours.
